A high school football player is fighting for his life in the hospital after a devastating blow to the head caused him to have a seizure on the sideline.

Rochester High School’s Carter Mason was playing against Shenango on Friday night when he received a hard hit to the helmet. He returned to the bench but then collapsed and doctors rushed to his aid.

According to a GoFundMe page Created in his name, Mason has a brain bleed and was intubated in hospital in the hours immediately following the catastrophic incident.

A new update on Saturday afternoon revealed that the young footballer is now “breathing on his own” and has been removed from intubation.

Mason has a younger brother and sister who are with him in the hospital, and his mother is “his only support,” according to the GoFundMe page.

The page also revealed: ‘Doctors have also stopped sedation and he is opening his eyes briefly. He is scheduled for an MRI.

Speaking to KDKA-TV after the game, Carter’s grandmother, Dorothy Mason, told reporters: “Apparently, he must have collided with another player and got hit on the left side of the head, and collapsed, they said it looked like convulsions.” They got him an ambulance and took him to Children’s Hospital. He was flown to Children’s Hospital.’

He also revealed that this is not the first concussion he has suffered during his young football career.

As of Sunday morning, more than $15,000 had been raised for Mason’s family, far more than the $2,000 goal set by fundraisers.

Mason’s injury is just the latest in a troubling series of head injuries on the football field, from the professional level to high school play.

Last week, legendary quarterback Brett Favre was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 54, after suffering multiple concussions throughout his two-decade career.

Favre has already talked about his “thousands” of head injuries on the football field, and he is not the only former footballer in a similar situation.

There has been a lot of concern in recent weeks about Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who suffered the third concussion of his young career last month.

He is currently sidelined indefinitely and many have urged him to retire.
