Hey, New Yorkers: Meet Your Neighborhood’s New Congressional District

All 50 states pulled new congressional districts this year, but hardly anywhere has the process been as controversial — or consistent — as in New York. Democrats once hoped to tip the playing field in their favor here, but after a Republican lawsuit and a court ruling, the state came up with a more neutral map for the next decade. The new rules were already causing heartburn for Democrats this summer, and they could cause more twists and turns in November’s pivotal midterm elections.

Old Astoria has long been connected by the East River to some of Manhattan’s wealthiest and whitest neighborhoods, including the Upper East Side, home of Carolyn B. Maloney, longtime representative of the 12th Congressional District. The court mapmaker’s decision to unify downtown Manhattan into a single seat and pull more compact districts across the city means the neighborhood will now be unified with Northwest Queens, including the greater Astoria, and parts of the Bronx. The new 14th district is much less affluent, more progressive and more Spanish than the old Astoria had voted.

In the upcoming midterm elections, the Democratic candidate is in this district Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is the incumbent.

The Republican candidate is Tina Fortea.

According to the Cook Political Report Race Ratings, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is preferred to win.
