Roy Keane has joked that Cristiano Ronaldo’s look of surprise in Portugal’s win against Ghana was due to the star hearing that Newcastle wanted to sign him.
Ronaldo is a free agent following his acrimonious departure from Manchester United and there has been much speculation about his future, including suggestions that Newcastle might be interested.
Manchester United legend Keane couldn’t help but joke about the situation.

Speaking on ITV Sport, Keane said: ‘Look at Ronaldo’s face, my God. Honestly, he just got a call from Newcastle.
Ronaldo, who was sitting on the bench after being substituted, was actually reacting to a mistake by Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa that, fortunately for his team, did not cost him dearly.
Costa put the ball down and did not realize Ghana’s Iñaki Williams was behind him. Williams ended up slipping, and his effort was cleared off the line.
Portugal came out on top 3-2, with Ronaldo opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 65th minute.

Andre Ayew equalized for Ghana, but goals from Joao Félix and Rafael Leao put Portugal on the rise. Osman Bukhari recovered a late goal for Ghana before Williams missed late.
Despite not currently having a club, Ronaldo is still a very important player for Portugal.
Following his goal against Ghana, the 37-year-old became the only player to score in five World Cups.

Ronaldo’s departure from United was officially confirmed on Tuesday, but he will wait until after the World Cup to make a decision on his future.
It was a frustrating first half of the season for Ronaldo, who found himself out of favor at United under Erik ten Hag.
Ronaldo was highly critical of United, ten Hag and the club’s owners, the Glazers, during an interview with Piers Morgan.
Speaking of ten Hag, Ronaldo said: ‘I don’t respect him. [Ten Hag] Because he doesn’t show me respect.
‘Some people don’t want me here, not just the coach but the other two or three guys. Not only this year, but also last year.
Ghana’s Inaki Williams was unable to take advantage of the mistake as he ended up slipping
‘Honestly, I shouldn’t say that. But listen, I don’t care. People should hear the truth. Yes, I feel betrayed.
Ronaldo added that nothing has changed at United since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
He said: ‘Since Sir Alex Ferguson left I didn’t see any development at the club, progress was zero.
‘Nothing has changed. Not just the pool, the jacuzzi, even the gym. They stopped on time, which surprised me a lot.
‘I think the fans should know the truth. I want the best for the club. But you have some things inside [the club] that doesn’t help to reach the highest level like City, Liverpool and even now Arsenal.
