Liam and Olivia are the most common names given to baby boys and girls in the United States in 2022 – marking the third year in a row both names have come out on top.
Although the most common names remained unchanged, Dutton was the name whose popularity grew the fastest. It is the surname of the fictional Dutton family in the popular western television series Yellowstone.
Considering the popularity of the show, it now seems to be a growing name for a newborn.
The Social Security Administration recently released the annual list of popular baby names. The agency tracks baby names in each state based on applications for Social Security cards.
Liam has been the most popular name for boys since 2017, while Olivia replaced Emma four years ago in 2019. Emma is now in second place.
Luna was there only new name to appear in the Top 10, replacing Harper.

The agency has been compiling the list since 1997.
“The list reveals the effect of pop culture on naming trends,” the Social Security Administration said.
Yellowstone has emerged as perhaps the biggest influence on new parents. The neo-western starring Kevin Costner debuted in 2018. Kayce and Rip, other characters on the show, also saw huge growth in popularity.
Costner, who plays John Dutton, the Yellowstone rancher on the TV show. It was recently reported that Costner will not be returning in the fifth season after starring on the show.
The news came after the surprise divorce from his wife
Dutton climbed the Social Security list to 835, a change of 986 places from 2021. It is the surname of the fictional family featured in the series, and it counts Costner’s John Dutton in its ranks.
Kayce, as in Kayce John Dutton on the show, rose to the 587th most popular name, up from 1,077 the previous year. Luke Grimes plays Kayce.

Rip, also from Yellowstone, also drew attention to the denomination, but he failed to make it to Social Security’s top 1,000. Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler is adjacent Dutton as John’s son-in-law.
Charlotte comes third for girl names, followed by Amelia, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Mia, Evelyn and Luna. For male names, Liam is followed by Noah, Oliver, James, Elijah, William, Henry, Lucas, Benjamin and Theodore.
Other names that rise quickly for boys: Chosen, Khaza, Eithan. Among the girls, Wrenlee is followed by Neriah, Arlet, Georgina and Amiri.
The latest data from the Social Security Administration shows that 3.64 million babies in the United States received Social Security cards last year, up slightly from 2021.
The SSA website also allows users to explore how common names are in particular states. For example, William and Olivia were the most popular names in 2021, while Oliver and Evelyn were the most common in Oregon.
