1. FC Heidenheim has been invited to score goals in the 2nd Bundesliga and will also end the 30th matchday on a direct promotion spot.
The team coached by Frank Schmidt won 2-0 (1-0) at SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Friday evening, using top strikers Tim Kleindienst (7th) and Jan-Niklas Beste (51st) to make use of the opponent’s serious defensive mistakes.
The promotion is no longer a dream, but “a goal that we want to achieve,” said Kleindienst on “Sky”: “We are in second place four games before the end. There are only finals left, so no mistake will be forgiven.”
Heidenheim thus consolidated second place in the table and is only one point behind leaders Darmstadt 98 (61 points), four points ahead of Hamburger SV (56). Both competitors are still in action later in the day, but HSV cannot catch Heidenheim even with a win at 1. FC Magdeburg (Saturday, 1 p.m. / Sky).
Bundesliga relegated Fürth, still in the middle of the table, started with a lot of momentum, but after a few minutes it got strange: Damian Michalski hit the post of his own goal while trying to clear, league top scorer Kleindienst scored his 23rd goal of the season. Before Heidenheim’s second goal by Beste, Fürth’s goalkeeper Andreas Linde lost the ball without much trouble.
