A severe heatwave will hit both eastern and western Australia, with residents of one state warned to stay indoors or risk heatstroke.

Parts of central and eastern Queensland have been placed under a heatwave warning and the Bureau of Meteorology urged residents to stay in air-conditioned buildings.

“Severe heat waves can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and lactating women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell,” she said.

‘Find a place to stay cool, such as your home, a library, a community center or a shopping mall. Close windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep heat out of your home.’

Weatherzone meteorologist Tim Woebbeking warned that Brisbane will see high temperatures of 30C all week except Wednesday.

“High humidity and cloudiness will prevent nights from falling below 23°C, while the day will be oppressively muggy,” he said.

Severe heatwave conditions are also forecast for parts of western Western Australia, while isolated areas in the Kimberley and the south-east will experience a low intensity heatwave.

The Bureau of Meteorology is monitoring tropical storm activity with severe storm warnings issued for the Pilbara, Gascoyne, Northern Interior, Southern Interior and Goldfields regions.

Low-intensity heat wave conditions will also affect isolated areas over Cape York Peninsula, the Mid-North and northern New South Wales, including the mid-northern coast and northern tablelands.
