Heartwarming moment when footy fan’s girlfriend says YES to his marriage proposal in State of Origin – after stadium security nearly shut down the whole thing

  • Gold Coast Blues supporters Adam and Sammi got engaged at Origin II in Perth
  • It was their anniversary after meeting and falling in love on Origin II last year
  • Adam came up with a grand plan, including a banner for the crowd to hold up
  • He even talked sweetly past the security who was trying to confiscate the banner

A heartwarming state of origin love story was nearly shut down at the last minute thanks to strict rules at Perth’s Optus stadium – only to let love eventually win.

Gold Coast aficionados Adam and Sammi have become the toast of social media after he proposed to her at halftime Sunday night in State of Origin II.

He even arranged for fellow Blues supporters to hold up a giant banner that read ‘Will You Marry Me?’

However, the funny Optus cops nearly seized the banner before Adam could even get through the turnstiles.

“It’s kind of a plan I’ve been working on for a while,” Adam told the Perth radio show. 6PR Breakfast with Gareth Parker

“We met last year during game two Origin, so this was our anniversary and I thought, what better time to do that?

“I had to organize it, it was quite interesting when I came by, I had made a little banner that [read] ‘Will you marry me?’ and apparently you can only have banners that are a certain size.

“When I got through the check-in, the police officer said ‘no, that’s going to be too big’.

“I had to slowly pull the ring out of my pocket and show him what I was going to do and he let me through.

Once that hurdle was overcome, all Adam needed was a window to organize the crowd around him to be part of the act. Fortunately, nature asked for Sammi.

“When Sam went to the bathroom, I quickly ran down the aisle and let everyone know what was going to happen,” he said.

‘During halftime I had passed the banner to the people a little higher than where we were standing.

“When the halftime whistle went off, I got Sam up and got her up the stairs and I went down a few more times.

“I had a few people around me with videos and cameras ready to go. They were all ready for the moment.’

Today Sammi is a bit worse from wear and tear and has largely lost her voice, but she told 6PR how overwhelming the experience was.

“When I turned around and saw the not-small sign, it was huge, behind me and everyone was just standing there, I was in shock,” she said.

“I had to tell my sister and then the whole rest of my family blew up my phone around 10:30 pm last night.

‘Because strangers send me online videos and photos, the people who recorded it and [taken] pictures, it’s just amazing. Awesome.’

So, since the couple met at Origin II in 2021 and got engaged at Origin II in 2022, will the wedding be at Origin II in 2023?

“You’ll have to talk to him about that,” Sammi laughed.

‘He’s the romantic, not me’
