Shay Harvey, 11 and now 13, had no idea what would happen when she returned home from school one day in 2022, but she was left in tears when she found out she had been officially adopted.
After three years of hosting her, Caitlin Harvey and Paul Harvey, who are in their thirties and from Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, knew it was time to make their family official.
Caitlin said: ‘We found out the adoption was final during the school day so we wanted to surprise her when she got home.
‘I knew adoption was coming, but I was excited for it to be final!’

In the emotional video, Shay stands on the sidewalk outside her house after returning from school, wearing an outfit matching her little sister’s.
Her mother Caitlin hands her a giant cookie that apparently says, “Welcome to the family.”
‘What does it say?’ the mother asks as she watches Shay read the text that was inserted into it.
The young woman opens her mouth in shock and exclaims ‘yay’, before hugging her adoptive mother and bursting into tears.
Dad Paul joins in on the hug as everyone gets excited as they officially welcome Shay into their family.

Shay’s adopted siblings are four-year-old Clara and 11-month-old Cam.
In a post from November 2023, Caitlin wrote: “Forever grateful for this family of mine.
‘Our family doesn’t always seem “traditional”, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Every year we have different amounts of children through biology, adoption and foster care!
“It may be chaos 99% of the time, but I love this life.”
The North Carolina family has been raising children for over five years and is licensed through the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina.
Shay is now 13 years old and has been officially adopted by the Harvey family for about two years; She regularly appears in videos by the family’s influencers.
