Heartbreaking surveillance footage shows the cruel moment a puppy was abandoned by a car in a California car park before desperately trying to chase his owners.

The three-month-old German shepherd puppy is seen emerging from a car door at the Country Living Mobile Home Park in Fresno on Thursday.

The sweet black dog with pointy ears first looks around in confusion before watching the vehicle drive away.

The as-yet-unnamed animal follows the car through the parking lot and down the street, desperate not to be left behind.

A witness from the mobile home community called the Fresno Animal Center, animal resources officer Rudy Pina told KSEE.

Pina said mobile home management was able to safely trap the dog and take care of her before animal control officers arrived.

“Fortunately, the management of the mobile home park was very adamant about taking care of the dog themselves, which we are very grateful for and was able to achieve a great outcome for the animal,” Pina explained.

“Unfortunately, our animal control department responds to animal abandonment calls every week in the city of Fresno,” he said.

According to the shelter, the puppy is very friendly and is available for adoption immediately.

Under California law, it is a misdemeanor to voluntarily abandon an animal and a report has been filed with local police, according to Pina.

Destiny Gomez, 24, a woman looking for homes for stray pets, saw the video and sent a message to the delivery driver.

‘When I saw that video, my heart broke. I couldn’t stop crying. “I couldn’t stop thinking about the dog,” Gomez told NBC Los Angeles in an interview.

After posting the video on Instagram to appeal to her vast network of dog-loving followers, she received a notice telling her where the dog might be.

“We also got coordinates of streets where someone saw him, so they said, ‘Can you go there?'” Gomez explained.

Tips from amateur canine detectives following Gomez’s Instagram led Gomez’s boyfriend directly to the neighborhood where the dog was abandoned. Hours later he found him safe and sound.

After making sure the dog was safe, fed and groomed, Gomez renamed him Chico and found him a foster father in nearby Palos Verdes.

Now Gomez is trying to find Chico a ‘forever home.’
