‘He wouldn’t start for Fulham!’: Paul Merson SLAMS decision to give Eddie Nketiah a new deal
‘He wouldn’t start for Fulham!’: Paul Merson DECIDES Arsenal’s decision to give Eddie Nketiah a new contract as he claims the striker wouldn’t get a game at Everton – and says Mikel Arteta needs to realize the academy product ‘won’t get’ your top four’
- Paul Merson has rejected Arsenal’s decision to give Eddie Nketiah a new deal
- The 23-year-old signed a contract until 2027 after a strong end to last season
- Merson claims the young striker is not good enough to lead Arsenal’s attack
- Shooting legend says Nketiah ‘wouldn’t start’ for some wrestling matches
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has criticized the club’s decision to give Eddie Nketiah a new contract for next season.
The 23-year-old striker was set to be a free agent this summer, but despite interest elsewhere, he signed new terms with the Gunners until 2027, in a deal estimated to be worth £100,000 a week.
However, Merson believes Arteta’s side should have looked elsewhere to bolster their attack and claims Nketiah would not start for relegation-wrestling teams in the Premier League.
Eddie Nketiah was rewarded with a new deal at Arsenal after a strong end to the season
Paul Merson believes Nketiah is not right to sack Arsenal back to the Champions League
Speaking with the Daily star“All Arsenal have up front at the moment is Eddie Nketiah, who recently signed a new contract when it looked like he might be leaving.”
“And no disrespect to Nketiah, but Mikel Arteta needs to realize he won’t get you in the top four. Absolutely no chance. That’s a fact.
“Nketiah cannot lead your Champions League push. He can’t get past Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison at Everton and they were almost relegated.
“He’s not coming into Fulham for Aleksandr Mitrovic and they’ve only just been promoted. I’m not trying it out, but it won’t get you into the top four.”
Nketiah was also awarded the iconic No.14 shirt – previously worn by Thierry Henry
The 23-year-old has scored all of his five league goals in the last two months of the season
The 23-year-old was heavily linked with a departure from the Emirates, but after a fruitful end to the season, he earned a new deal and the iconic number 14 shirt previously worn by Thierry Henry.
Following the departure of Alexandre Lacazette at the end of the campaign, Nketiah is the only recognized striker in the squad, prompting the Gunners to look to this window for attacking reinforcements.
Man City’s Gabriel Jesus tops the list and they have also shown serious interest in Leeds’ winger Raphinha – having already sealed the signing of Fabio Vieira for £34million.
Merson suggested Arteta should sign the Brazilian striker ‘if they seriously want to get back into the top four’.
Arsenal have been warned to sign Gabriel Jesus to finish in top four
Merson added: “Arsenal must get Gabriel Jesus if they are serious about getting back into the top four. They have to get him. It’s that simple.
“Everything goes out the window if they don’t. It doesn’t matter what else they do. All they have up front now is Eddie Nketiah. And no disrespect, but Nketiah won’t get you in the top four. Absolutely no chance. That’s a fact.’
There is now confidence that completion is near for the Brazilian, who was Arsenal’s main target.
