HBO’s The Last Of Us TV Series May Be More Expensive Than Game of Thrones

HBO is gearing up to start filming their massive TV series adaptation of the hit video game series The Last Of Us, which could be the network’s biggest show yet.

Shooting began last week in the Alberta, Canada town of Fort McLeod, with local IATSE 212 union chairperson Damian Petti confirming “it’s the biggest project shooting in Canada right now.”

While Petti said he “can’t confirm official budget figures,” he said, “this project is well over eight figures per episode,” which could make it a more expensive show than their juggernaut fantasy series Game of Thrones.

“The Last of Us, which begins photography this week, is indeed a monster. It has five art directors and an army of hundreds of technicians,” Petti said.

“It has had six months of preparation and shooting (in Alberta) for 12 months,” Petti added of the production.

He added that filming the show in Fort McLeod will “have a multiplier effect on our economy in terms of its impact.”

“There are hundreds of related companies that take advantage of the abundance of work,” he continued.

The Last Of Us has been confirmed to have a 10-episode first season, with Petti’s comments indicating that the budget for the first season alone would be at least $100 million.

While Petti adds that this show “well exceeds the figure of eight per episode,” the show could cost between $100 million and perhaps $150 million, if each episode is budgeted at $15 million.

Considering those numbers, the show starts in a place that’s more expensive than the expensive final seasons of Game of Thrones.

While the pilot alone would reportedly cost between $5 million and $10 million (with two separate pilot shoots featuring actors being recast), the first season would cost between $50 million and $60 million for 10 episodes. .

The final season of Game of Thrones is said to have cost $15 million per episode, although it only had six episodes at a cost of $90 million.

The Last Of Us has another Game of Thrones connection, starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ella, who both starred in the hit fantasy series.

The story takes place, “twenty years after modern civilization is destroyed,” after Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of a cramped quarantine zone.

“What starts out as a small job quickly turns into a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both have to traverse the US and depend on each other to survive,” the show’s description reads.
