HBL title aspirants win in step

The foxes Berlin have presented in the close race for the title of the Handball Bundesliga and have jumped to the top of the table for the time being.

The Berliners won on Thursday with great difficulty 33:32 (18:15) at TSV Hannover-Burgdorf and climbed past THW Kiel with a plus point lead, but they can pass again in the top game against SC Magdeburg on Sunday.

The SCM kept up with the foxes on Thursday and after the sovereign 38:34 (17:16) at the Bergisches HC they are now at 40:10 points and thus one behind the capital club in third place. Backcourt player Kay Smits was the outstanding man at the German champions with 14 goals.

SG Flensburg-Handewitt also kept their chances for the title and secured fourth place in the table by beating SC DHfK Leipzig 30:27 (15:17). Coach Maik Machulla’s team is only two points behind the foxes after their third league win in a row.

Two days after the surprising separation from coach Hrvoje Horvat, HSG Wetzlar celebrated a 28:26 (11:10) win at Frisch Auf Göppingen and moved four plus points clear of the relegation zone.
