Hayley Atwell reveals reservations about starring in Shakespeare with Tom Hiddleston

Hiddleston and Atwell appeared in The only show on Tuesday, January 19 to speak with the hosts Lauren Laverne and Alex Jones about his upcoming theater performance.

Atwell confessed: “When Jamie Lloyd, the director, called me to offer me the role of Beatrice, my only question to him was, ‘What’s it going to be like, Hey Nonny Nonny? And are we going to do dancing in the barn? And then, basically, practically shared a Spotify playlist with me and the music was in no way Hey Nonny Nonny.

“I think the best thing about Shakespeare is that it’s for now, for the people of now. Back then, you know, the songs chosen at that time were very much of their time. And so we bring it to the present day, very It’s kind of a live concept, which is very fun, very joyful. In rehearsals today, I kept thinking, because there’s a lot of dancing in it, and it’s like we’re dancing like no one’s watching, but everyone’s watching.”

Jones asked Hiddleston why he had arrived at The One Show’s makeup room after rehearsals with pink confetti in his hair. He explained: “Well, yes, Much Ado About Nothing is about a big celebration. Generally speaking, the plot of the play is that a group of old friends get together to celebrate and have a big party. And at this party two of them Young people fall in love and everyone is enchanted by them.

“And also at this party. Beatrice, played by Hailey and Benedict, are these old sparring partners who have this kind of historic chemistry, which is kind of dueling, sparkling wit and everyone loves it. And then all their friends get together And help them realize that they were actually meant for each other all along. That’s why it’s a great, great love story. It’s one of Shakespeare’s great comedies, and there’s a wedding, and therefore. there is confetti, and in. our “Production can be pink. And there can be some lunging and other things that happen at weddings and parties, you know, people get excited and do snappy things.”

The show’s other guests challenged Hiddleston to demonstrate his lunging technique after Atwell claimed it was very impressive. She said: “The rehearsals we are doing at the moment are very free. When you said fragile or agile it reminded me of Tom’s very agile lunge that I have witnessed.”

Urged to demonstrate his ‘agile lunge’, Hiddleston said: “You have to come see the show if you want to see the lunge. I’m not sure my pants can handle it.”

The One Show airs on BBC One at 7pm Monday to Friday.

Much Ado About Nothing will run at the Theater Royal Drury from February 10 to April 5, 2025.
