Three people have died in a two-vehicle crash in the Northern Territory.

The two vehicles collided at approximately 12.30pm on Friday on the Stuart Highway near Hayes Creek, south of Darwin.

All three people died at the scene and police described the incident as a “significant loss of life.”

“Both lanes of the Stuart Highway are expected to remain closed until late tonight,” a Northern Territory Police spokesman said.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Musgrave said the crash “will have a devastating impact on the families involved as well as our first responders.”

‘We are in the early stages of the investigation and the exact circumstances surrounding the accident are unknown.

‘More information will be released as it becomes available.’
