Many people may not know it, but Hailey Welch, also known as the “Hawk Tuah” girl, has a heart of gold amid mounting criticism from Mets fans for her appearance on the mound before a home game against the A’s.
The social media sensation was invited to appear on the mound and throw out the first pitch before Thursday’s game (a 7-6 loss for New York), despite some wondering what the heck he was doing at a baseball game.
A Mets reporter for Newsday also revealed that he wasn’t even allowed to refer to Welch by his famous online nickname.
Now, Welch has responded to the backlash following her first significant public appearance since becoming an overnight social media sensation.
She told her roughly 229,600 followers on X: ‘I guess some members of the baseball community weren’t too happy to see me yesterday.
‘Hawk Tuah’s’ daughter Hailey Welch was at the Mets’ game against the A’s on Thursday to raise awareness for a nonprofit called ‘America’s Vet Dogs’ amid fan backlash over her appearance.
‘The main reason I went to the game was to raise awareness and donate to America’s Veterinary Dogs, which matches dogs with war veterans for a permanent home.
“Join me and donate to this amazing charity. I miss you already, my friend.”
Welch later responded to his post with a link to the nonprofit he was raising awareness for at the Mets game: Vetdogs.org.
People at X were quick to praise her for speaking out.
“Ironically, you made a somewhat dirty joke and it went viral because of it. But honestly, in every other interaction I’ve seen, your season has been positive and encouraging. I wish you all the success,” one fan commented on Welch’s post.
