Liverpool will be hoping Darwin Nunez becomes a prolific goalscorer now that he has found his confidence in front of goal.

Nunez’s brilliant brace against Sparta Prague on Thursday night took his streak to eight goals in nine games, having scored just once in the previous 13.

The Uruguayan couldn’t be more optimistic against Manchester City on Sunday despite missing a fortnight last month with a muscle problem.

Midfielder Harvey Elliott is excited about what the 24-year-old can achieve now.

“He’s always had the skill and the quality, but sometimes I think it was a confidence thing,” Elliott said.

Now he is proving it. He scored a great goal at the weekend (a stoppage time winner against Nottm Forest) and had another great performance in Prague.

“You just need to keep going and we will support you all the way.”

“We know what he is capable of: he is a huge player, hence the price and why Liverpool signed him.

“It will only get better if you stay confident.”

With Nunez justifying his £85m price tag and Mo Salah available again after his hamstring problems, Liverpool will want to take advantage and extend their lead over City in the league standings to four points.

Elliott highlighted the importance of Sunday’s game, saying: “It’s two world-class coaches facing each other, but it’s at our home and the coach has the fans behind us.”

“We know it’s a difficult game against City, but I don’t think we can exaggerate it more than any other game or think about it too much,” Elliott added.

“We are a huge club too and we have to think about ourselves.

“It’s about two world-class coaches facing each other, but it’s at our house and the coach has the fans behind us from the first warm-up.”

“If we think too much about City, our game plan goes out the window. So we have to step up and make sure we are prepared from the beginning.”
