Harry Kane finally ended his trophy drought at Bayern Munich with a memorable victory in the Visit Malta Cup.

Unsurprisingly, the place where he got his long-awaited trophy was at his former club, Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent 14 years without winning a trophy.

But an emotional Kane snubbed the chance to get his hands on a rare trophy, refusing to lift the Visit Malta Cup out of respect for his former team.

The centre-forward came off the bench upon his return to north London today to help guide the German side to a 3-2 victory.

Former Spurs defender Eric Dier also made a second-half appearance and claimed a winners’ medal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after joining Kane in receiving a special commemorative gift from former player Ledley King before the match.

It was former captain Kane’s first return to his old club, where he scored 280 goals, but he made little impact, taking just one shot in a quiet display.

But his Bayern team got the job done anyway, overturning a first-half deficit by exploiting an increasingly worrying Spurs weakness at set-pieces.

The hosts took the lead in the first minute when winger Dejan Kulusevski exchanged a one-two with Brennan Johnson before finding the net in this pre-season encounter.

Dayot Upamecano then punished Spurs for a series of missed chances when he converted Mathys Tel’s header from close range to make it 1-1 in the 15th minute.

Vincent Kompany’s side then took the lead through a Serge Gnabry finish before club legend Thomas Muller added to Tottenham’s misery by scoring from a free-kick curled into the area.

Kulusevski provided some hope late on after converting a clever pass from Lucas Bergvall, but it was not enough to deny Kane the sweet, if unfamiliar, taste of victory on a hot and humid August day.

The England international had moved to Germany last summer in a bid to finally get his hands on some silverware.

And it seemed like a safe bet, as Bayern had won all 11 previous Bundesliga editions and also had some DFB Pokal trophies to their name.

Bayer Leverkusen came to spoil Kane’s party, securing a historic double and even reaching the Europa League final, leaving the striker with the familiar feeling of an empty trophy cabinet.

This has increased the pressure on the England captain’s Euro 2024 campaign, with the Three Lions heading into the tournament among the favourites.

We all know how this all ended. Kane did not end 58 years of pain or his own trophy drought.

The striker was hugely out of colour in a series of lethargic displays in an England shirt over the summer and it seemed as though the team’s poor run to the final was despite him, not because of him.

After the clash against Spain, another trophy slipped from the icon’s hands, as Kane was again substituted, as had happened in the semi-final clash with Holland.

Each failed aerial duel and half-baked race generated more hysteria about the 31-year-old’s “curse” and whether his was a career that simply wasn’t destined to include a trophy.

Kane can now finally silence the doubters and ridiculers after guiding Bayern to victory in the Visit Malta Cup against his former team.

It may not be the Champions League, the Bundesliga or the Euros, but as Spurs’ motto, emblazoned behind the joyous trophy lifters today, goes, “The game is about glory” – and today Kane finally got a taste of it.
