Australian boxer Harry Garside has revealed he has found love again after his heartbreak at the Paris Olympics.

The 27-year-old boxer made an inspiring return to the ring after being cleared of domestic violence allegations made by his ex-partner, Ash Ruscoe.

However, he failed to make it past the first round in Paris and later told Nine he “felt like a failure” for having trained for 20 years only to fall at the first hurdle.

Reflecting on her sporting career on Nova 96.9, Garside revealed that she has a new romance.

“I had this strange ambition that maybe I could walk with giants and I guess on that 20-year journey, I finally arrived at a destination where I believed I could do that,” Garside said.

“It’s a nice journey, a nice evolution. I think the most important thing I learned from this is that I set big, bold goals for myself… but along the way, you end up feeling like you can achieve them.”

Garside said her new relationship came when she least expected it, after she had vowed to focus solely on winning the gold medal.

“Throughout that process, I really fell in love… it happened so unexpectedly, which I think is the best kind of love… when you’re not looking for it, but it just appeared in my life,” she said.

“She’s originally from Sydney but currently lives in London so I’m really excited for her to be back at the end of the year… definitely worth the wait.”

Garside added that he is glad his shock defeat came at the age of 27, admitting he would have found the result difficult to come to terms with had he been younger.

“If this had happened five years ago, when I was a little bit younger and my identity was limited to just being a boxer… just thinking about some of the decisions I made when I failed, and how bad I felt, and what I was doing privately to hurt myself. It was a little bit scary,” he said.

‘But, I guess, I don’t know if it’s growth, I don’t know if it’s maturity, maybe a cocktail of everything, but it hasn’t happened this time, and I don’t know if I’m expecting it.’

Pressed on his boxing future, Garside said: ‘I’m just trying to stay fit… The decisions I made when I failed were negative, and I’m just trying my best to do more positive things.

‘I train every day. I keep fit. I want to do some triathlons over the summer. I love boxing so I’ll keep boxing, I’m not sure I’ll go pro, next Olympics, I’m not sure I’ll stop completely. But I always love doing it so I’ll keep doing it until I lose the love for it.’
