Australian gold medal hope Harry Garside has been ruled out of the Olympics after losing in the round of 16.

The boxer had high hopes after winning bronze in Tokyo in 2021 but fell at the first hurdle in Paris, losing 5-0 to Hungary’s Richard Kovacs.

And Garside, 27, looked dejected after the fight, looking emotional as Kovacs celebrated his victory.

Garside’s medal in Tokyo (Australia’s first in 33 years) saw the sport surge in popularity at home.

Australia has a record 12 boxers in Paris bidding to become the country’s first Olympic champions in the sport.
