Prince Harry received unexpected support from a prominent columnist who believes the royals have been dealt a tough hand in 2024. Michael Deacon, columnist and assistant editor of The telegraph expressed his sympathy for Harry and Meghan in a recent article, acknowledging the difficult year the couple has faced.
In his article, Deacon posed the question: “Is anyone else starting to feel sorry for Harry and Meghan?” He continued: “Okay, so they can be tedious, cloying, untalented, whiny, and unbearably prudish. But look what a terrible 2024 the poor have had.”
Deacon highlighted how the couple’s public image has suffered amid several setbacks, stating: “Everything seems to be falling apart” for the Sussexes, with each of their endeavors facing obstacles. From the delayed launch of Meghan’s lifestyle brand, which ran into trademark issues, to Prince Harry’s documentary on polo, which received critical reviews, it seems the couple has been struggling to regain their footing.
Deacon also pointed out the significant challenge they now face: the uncertainty of securing a renewed Netflix contract after the current one expires. Adding to their difficulties, Deacon noted that even their former supporters appear to be turning against them.
He referred to a piece of The cutwhich included the “scathingly headlined” review: “Harry and Meghan’s projects can’t stop failing.” Deacon delved into the couple’s problems and suggested that they needed to be aware of the root cause of their problems.
“No matter how pretentiously narcissistic the couple may seem, surely even they must have realized by now what the source of their problems are?” he commented. His conclusion was stark: “People were only interested in hearing what Harry and Meghan had to say when they were badmouthing the royal family.” With their royal secrets exhausted, Deacon noted, “They have nothing anyone wants.”
As the year 2024 progresses, the Sussexes face a number of professional and personal challenges, leaving many to wonder what the future holds for their brand and public influence.
