A young boy died after being pulled from a dam on a rural property.
The two-year-old boy was found in the Portland Canal near Lithgow in central western New South Wales on Tuesday afternoon.
The seriously injured boy was airlifted to Bathurst Hospital, where he later died.
“At approximately 3pm today, emergency services were called to a property on Pipers Flat Road, Portland, following reports of concern for welfare,” a police spokesperson said.
‘Officers attached to Chifley Police District attended and discovered that a two-year-old child had been removed from a dam on the property.
“The child was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Bathurst Hospital in a critical condition.”
Fire and Rescue NSW, police and paramedics responded to the emergency, and several fire engines were also spotted on Tuesday night, The Daily Telegraph reported.
Investigators were seen speaking with witnesses at the scene, where play equipment and bicycles were seen scattered around the backyard.

The house on the rural property is surrounded by a wire fence and there are also several buses and caravans on site.
A crime scene has been established and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
It is believed the tragic death is not being treated as suspicious.
