One of the most influential figures in British fashion is believed to have helped secure a multi-million pound deal that secured the purchase of fashion group N Brown.

Harold Tillman, former director of fashion brand Jaeger and luxury retailer Aquascutum, arranged negotiations between retail magnate Mike Ashley and Lord Alliance, whose family took control of N Brown at a £191m profit in October, according to a fountain.

At the time of the purchase, Ashley’s Frasers Group controlled just over 20 per cent of N Brown.

Ashley is believed to have approached Tillman to help discuss the purchase with Alliance, president of N Brown since 1968.

The result was an acquisition by a company controlled by the president’s son, Joshua Alliance.

It is not known whether Tillman, former president of the British Fashion Council, received any compensation for his services.
