A man has been charged after he allegedly threatened a football player with a knife at a local rugby league match in a terrifying incident over the weekend.
Wild scenes erupted at a sports ground in Hammondville, southwest of Sydney, around 2pm on Saturday.
The alleged attack is believed to have occurred after a reserve grade football match between rugby league clubs Chester Hill and Cabramatta.
A 19-year-old bystander and a player allegedly got into an argument, before the bystander threatened the player with a knife.
A 19-year-old man allegedly attacked a player in a rugby league match between rugby league football clubs Chester Hill and Cabramatta at the weekend at an oval in Hammondville, south-west Sydney, after that the two had supposedly had an argument before.
It is unclear if the two men are related and what they discussed at the time before the alleged incident unfolded.
Nearby players and spectators on the field intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.
Footage showed crowds forming as the altercation unfolded in front of families and parents who had visited the oval to watch the game.
No one was injured during the incident.
The 19-year-old man allegedly fled the scene, before officers found him nearby a short time later.
A NSW Police spokesman said the man was charged after being taken to Liverpool Police Station.
“He was taken to Liverpool Police Station and charged with brawling, armed with intent to commit an indictable offense and wielding a knife in a public place,” it said.
The man from South Wentworthville, in western Sydney, was denied bail and appeared in Liverpool Local Court on Monday.
He was denied bail and ordered to appear in court on August 21.
