A new mod that frees Half-Life: Alyx from the VR constraint has reached another milestone.
Half-Life: Alyx is a milestone for VR games, but also for shooters. But in order to be able to play the game at all, appropriate hardware is necessary. This means that the players in the Valve title remain relatively limited – fans change this with the help of their specially developed mod.
Half-Life: Alyx – but without VR constraint
The GB_2 Development Team’s project makes Half-Life: Alyx completely playable without VR. The prerequisite for using the free mod is, of course, to own the main game on Steam. Shooter fans should of course note: Half-Life: Alyx is of course meant to be played in VR. In terms of gameplay or atmosphere, you have to be prepared for cuts or at least compromises.
VR is also essential for earning all achievements and you cannot use an existing save. So if you want to try Half-Life: Alyx without a virtual reality headset, you have to create a new savegame.
Not the first non-VR project on Alyx
No, the idea is of course not completely new. Shortly after the release of Half-Life: Alyx, other shooter fans were already trying to make the VR game playable without VR. For example, we reported on comparable mod projects three years ago.
However, what is particularly exciting about GB_2’s project is that the mod can be used completely without cheats or no-clip tricks and the developers are still working on it. Thanks to the mod, Half-Life: Alyx can be played from start to finish without a VR headset, but the team behind it is not completely satisfied with that.
So there can still be bugs or minor problems that the modders want to fix in the future. In the future, for example, they want to revise the HUD, improve the animations and iron out any game errors.
