Hackers target pro-life US state agencies in Kentucky and Arkansas to protest the destruction of Roe v. Wade

  • SiegedSec, a hacking group, has announced it is targeting US anti-abortion states
  • The first trove of leaked data includes eight gigabytes from Kentucky and Arkansas containing personally identifiable information
  • The hacking group has compromised more than 100 websites since its inception

A group of hackers known as SiegedSec is targeting US state agencies with anti-abortion stances in protest against the Supreme Court’s destruction of Roe v Wade that guaranteed the right to abortion.

The first set of data it leaked includes eight gigabytes apparently stolen from state governments in Kentucky, which have banned abortion except in rare circumstances, and Arkansas, which has banned it completely.

A post on the hacker group’s Telegram channel appears to show documents containing information about real estate transactions and contains personally identifiable information from residents of those states.

On June 23, the Supreme Court turned nearly 50 years of precedent upside down when it overturned the landmark Roe v Wade decision that legalized abortion in America — sparking widespread protests and multiple state-level bans.

“Like many, we are pro-choice, one should not be denied access to abortion,” the hacking group said on Telegram

‘Like many, we are pro-choice, one should not be denied access to abortion.’

SiegedSecs pronunciation continues, “As additional pressure on the US government, we have leaked many internal documents and files retrieved from the government servers of Kentucky and Arkansas.”

“These records contain a lot of employee PII (personally identifiable information) and much more.”

The group added that “the attacks will continue” and stated: “Our main targets are all pro-life entities, including government servers of the states with anti-abortion laws. Keep protesting, protect yourself, f*** the government.’

SiegedSec also assured its followers that while the group is committed to abortion rights, the group “will still be doing blackhat stuff,” presumably referring to the more typical activities of targeting private sector companies.

According to darkweb security service DarkOwl, the hacker group was created as a result of the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine.

SiegedSec has compromised more than 100 websites since its inception, DarkOwl said.

It has also gained access to several thousand LinkedIn profiles.

Before these new US state hacks, the group was seen as a “fairly small-scale operation” with the potential “to evolve into a high-impact cyber threat,” DarkOwl said.
