On Tuesday night, Minnesota Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson became the latest NHL goalie to score a goal by shooting the puck down the ice.

The Swedish goalkeeper, who shares the area with former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, became the first goalkeeper since Tristan Jarry achieved the feat on November 30, 2023 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Gustavsson’s goal makes him the 15th goalkeeper in NHL history to give up a goal, but only the 10th to shoot the puck into an empty goal. He joins the list of several former Vezina Trophy winners, including Martin Brodeur, Ron Hextall, Jose Theodore and Linus Ullmark.

Historically, the first goalie goal was by Billy Smith of the New York Islanders on November 28, 1979, when Rob Ramage scored into his own goal. Meanwhile, Hextall became the first goalie to shoot a puck down the ice, achieving the milestone on December 8, 1987.

The St. Louis Blues became the latest team to give up a goalie goal, joining several Original Six franchises, including the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens.

Last season, two Penguins goalies scored a goal, and Alex Nedeljkovic collected his. third career AHL goal with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins about a week and a half before Jarry achieved his NHL goal.
