A guinea pig has been abandoned at the entrance to a tube station with a heartbreaking note reading “I need a new owner.”

The young brown and white pet, aged between six months and a year, was discovered by staff at Canning Town station, east London, at 4.20pm on February 18.

RSPCA inspector Shahnaz Ahmad picked up the pet and took it to an animal welfare centre.

She said: ‘He looked healthy and well looked after.

‘It is very sad that someone has abandoned their pet in this way.

‘We encourage people to approach local animal welfare charities to help them care for their pets, rather than leaving them in a vulnerable situation like this.

‘This guinea pig was found alone, guinea pigs are sociable by nature and usually prefer to be with one or more guinea pigs.

‘A guinea pig can develop abnormal behavior and suffer if left unaccompanied.

‘Abandoning pets in this way is incredibly cruel and is never the answer.

“If anyone has information we would ask them to contact the RSPCA appeal line, confidentially on 0300 123 8018.”

The guinea pig, newly named DiscoPig, will soon be available for rehoming, along with a partner, at the RSPCA.
