Police are carrying out a search for the man who allegedly stabbed a taxi driver.

It is understood a verbal argument over the fee broke out shortly after the man was picked up on Eve Street in Guildford, in Sydney’s west, about 4.30pm on Friday.

Police allege the man got out of the taxi and approached the driver’s side before pulling out a knife and stabbing her hands.

The pair were caught throwing punches in nearby Bright Park before the passenger fled on foot down a nearby street.

“Police were informed that he was stabbed by an unknown man during a dispute,” a police spokesperson said.

“The 40-year-old man was treated for minor injuries before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.”

The man was captured on CCTV running down a suburban street while paramedics treated the driver for cuts to his hands and arms.

He was taken by ambulance to Sydney’s Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

The incident has led to calls for greater protection for taxi drivers.

“Let’s put this into perspective, a passenger was allegedly carrying a knife into the taxi,” said Nick Abrahim, chief executive of the NSW Taxi Council. 9News.

‘Can you imagine for a moment that that person goes to someone else’s workplace carrying a gun or a knife?

“We have to protect our drivers.”

Police are urging anyone who can help with their investigations to come forward.

The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
