Otávio Ribeiro was seen on surveillance camera handing his cellphone to two assailants on a motorcycle before the 36-year-old robbery victim disarmed one of the suspects, a 16-year-old boy, and shot him in Guarulhos, Brazil, on August 4. The teenager was rushed to a local hospital, where he died.

Dramatic video captured the moment a man targeted by motorcycle robbers turned the tables during a street robbery, grabbing the gun and fatally shooting one of his would-be robbers.

The brutal exchange, which left a 16-year-old boy dead, occurred in the city of Guarulhos, southeastern Brazil, on the night of August 4.

Surveillance footage shows Otávio Ribeiro saying goodbye to a co-worker before walking home when a pair of suspects on a motorcycle intercept him.

Pointed at gunpoint, Ribeiro can be seen handing his cellphone to the teenage assailant before lunging forward and disarming the attacker while knocking him and his accomplice to the ground.

Ribeiro then shoots the teen several times as he runs away, the footage shows. Ribeiro manages to shoot the teen’s accomplice, who can be seen picking up the motorcycle and speeding away.

The teenager, who suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder and left arm, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died.

The Military Police of the State of São Paulo recovered Ribeiro’s cell phone and wallet, in addition to two other cell phones that had been stolen that same night.

Ribeiro was later found at his home and told police he fled the scene because he feared for his safety. He was taken to a local police station, where he was questioned and released.

The murder of the teenage robber came just two weeks after a 17-year-old boy was hit by a bus and killed after stealing a 71-year-old man’s cell phone in São Paulo.

The boy, whose name was not released, was seen on surveillance footage approaching the victim near a corner and snatching her phone.

The teenager ran away and was hit by the bus at the intersection.

At least 158,150 robberies and 137,891 cell phone thefts were reported in São Paulo state in 2023, according to an annual report published by the Brazilian Security Forum in July.

In the state capital, an average of 1,781.6 cell phones were stolen or robbed per 100,000 inhabitants.

In total, 937,294 cell phones were stolen or robbed across Brazil last year, an average of 107 per hour.
