A man and a woman have been charged with the death of a two-year-old boy who had been taken to hospital with significant head injuries and later died.

The 33-year-old man and 21-year-old woman were arrested by police on Wednesday in Griffith, western New South Wales, over the boy’s death.

The boy was rushed to Griffith Base Hospital with serious head injuries on December 1 last year.

Police have charged a man (pictured) and a woman over the death of a toddler who died in December last year.

He was later flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick, but died on December 3 from his injuries.

Both were charged with involuntary manslaughter and the woman was also charged with assault causing bodily injury.

The man and woman were refused bail and appeared at Griffith Local Court on Thursday.

Doug Curran, mayor of Griffith, said the boy’s death left the local community devastated.

“It’s a heartbreaking set of circumstances,” he told reporters.

“Finding out that the two individuals who have been arrested… lived (in the region) is difficult for us to accept,” he said.

After being notified of the boy’s death, New South Wales Police created Strike Force Burtundy to investigate how the boy died.

Detectives carried out a search at a property in Binya, about 30 kilometers north-east of Griffith, on March 19.

Police are still carrying out investigations into the incident and have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
