Grieving young widow of murdered NYPD officer Jason Rivera, 22, posts touching tribute to husband

The grieving widow of murdered 22-year-old NYPD officer Jason Rivera yesterday posted a moving tribute to her husband she married three months ago.

Rivera was shot and killed in an ambush Friday night as he and his partner, Officer Wilbert Mora, visited a Harlem address to investigate a domestic violence call.

The pair were allegedly shot by convicted felon Lashawn McNeil, 47.

“Fly high my beautiful angel,” Rivera’s widow wrote on Instagram, along with a photo of his locker she took at the NYPD’s 32nd Police Station in downtown Harlem.

“Yesterday I visited the locker room where you FaceTimed me over dinner or just before you had to go down to the collection room for roll call at 3:00 PM,” she said.

‘Last night was supposed to be your day 5 and you were RDO [off] for the next three days. We’ve both been waiting for your RDOs to release them together. But now your soul will spend the rest of my days with me, through me, right next to me.

‘I love you to the end of time,’ wrote the grieving widow – who has not been mentioned by name.

Her Instagram profile also features photos of the newly married couple at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. In one post, she describes her husband as “my soulmate, best friend and lover from now to the end of time.”

Family members, along with hundreds of NYPD officers and Mayor Eric Adams, paid tribute to Rivera when his body was transferred to a Manhattan funeral home on Sunday.

Officers Rivera and Mora were shot while answering a call about an argument between a woman and her adult son. McNeil allegedly ran away from a bedroom at the back of the Harlem apartment and opened fire.

Rivera lost his life while Mora, 27, is still fighting for him and remains in Harlem Hospital after undergoing two surgeries to remove a bullet lodged in his brain.

Funeral services for Officer Rivera concluded as his comrades in blue mourned his loss. The officer had previously written about joining the police force to make a difference in what he described as a “chaotic city.”

A solemn scene unfolded on Sunday with a column of uniformed police officers and a line of firefighters flanking the streets as a hearse carrying the fallen officer left the coroner’s office for a funeral home.

A vigil is scheduled for Thursday with a funeral service scheduled for Friday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The coroner ruled Rivera’s death a homicide after an autopsy revealed he died of gunshot wounds to the head and torso.

Mora, who has been with the NYPD for four years, remains in a life-threatening condition, Adams said Sunday. Police said he would be transferred from Harlem Hospital to NYU Langone Medical Center.

“It just affected our entire city, if not the entire country. And this comes after five officers were shot, the 11-month-old baby who was shot in Brooklyn,” the mayor said.

The shooting is the latest in a series of crimes that have shaken the country’s most populous city and the nation’s largest police force, with 36,000 officers.

In the three weeks since Adams took office, a 19-year-old cashier was shot dead while working a night shift at a Burger King, a woman was pushed to death in a subway station and a baby was seriously injured. injured by a stray bullet while sitting in a parked car with her mother. With the shooting in Harlem Friday night, four police officers had been shot in as many days.

Details of what led to the deadly showdown were still emerging.

Officials said a woman who made an emergency call on Friday said she was ill and that her son who had come to care for her had become “problematic.” Adams said the woman did not specify the problem.

Authorities said three officers went to the apartment after the call came in. The officers spoke to the woman and another son, but there was no question of a weapon, according to the police.

As Rivera and Mora walked down a narrow hallway from the front of the apartment to check on McNeil, he swung open a bedroom door and began firing, police said.

Both officers were shot before they could draw their weapons and defend themselves, police said.

As McNeil tried to flee, a third officer who had stayed with McNeil’s mother in front of the apartment shot McNeil in the head and arm, said James Essig, chief of the NYPD detective.

McNeil had a drug conviction in New York City in 2003. He also had several out-of-state arrests. In 1998, he was arrested in South Carolina on suspicion of illegally carrying a gun, but records show the case was later dismissed.

In 2002, he was arrested in Pennsylvania on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, Essig said.

McNeil was married, but the couple split nearly 20 years ago, according to Theresa Noa, who is married to his ex-wife’s brother. She said McNeil had four children from that marriage.
