A decision on the future of U.S. men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter is expected to be made by mid-next week.
That information It was revealed exclusively by Fox Sports during the break in their coverage of the Portugal-France Euro Cup.
Calls for Berhalter’s dismissal have grown in recent days since the U.S. team was eliminated from the Copa America following losses to Panama and Uruguay. The U.S. made history by becoming the first Copa America host nation not to advance to the knockout stage.
As Fox Sports noted, the time it took the U.S. Soccer Federation to decide the fate of women’s national team coach Vlatko Andonovski was roughly the same as it took the latter to decide.
Andonovski was fired about 10 days after the U.S. women’s national team was eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
A decision on Gregg Berhalter’s future is expected to be announced by the middle of next week.
Under Berhalter, the USMNT was eliminated from the Copa America with two losses.
There has been no indication or serious rumor to suggest a decision one way or the other on whether Berhalter stays or goes.
But there have been calls from all quarters of American soccer for Berhalter to leave or be removed from his post following his disgraceful performance at the Copa America.
That includes U.S. soccer legends Clint Dempsey, Alexi Lalas and Carli Lloyd on the FOX Sports panel immediately after the game.
Advocacy groups like the American Outlaws have also called for Berhalter to move forward.
Even Berhalter’s rivals in CONCACAF have spoken out: Canada coach Jesse Marsch admitted he was “disappointed” by the USMNT’s exit, citing their “lack of discipline.”
There has already been speculation about who could replace Berhalter, with some suggesting the U.S. Soccer Federation should go after Jürgen Klopp.
That includes DailyMail.com’s Tim Howard, who said he would travel to Spain himself to try to convince Klopp to join the US national team.
