The Green Lantern series based on DC Comics characters moved from Max to HBO while receiving an official series order.
The revamped adaptation titled Lanterns will follow Green Lantern legend Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart, “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark Earth mystery as they investigate a murder in the heartland of America,” Warner Bros. Discovery said. Tuesday in a press release.

John Stewart is also a superhero known as Green Lantern who was created by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams and first appeared in the Green Lantern comics in the early 1970s. The character was the first African-American superhero to appear in DC Comics.
Hal Jordan was created in 1959 by writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane and first appeared in October 1959. He was a reinvention of the previous Green Lantern, Alan Scott, who appeared in comics in the 1940s.
The Green Lantern series based on DC Comics characters moved from Max to HBO while receiving an official series order and includes Hal Jordan, played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 Green Lantern film.
The eight-episode Lanterns straight-to-series order has Chris Mundy as showrunner and executive producer and will also co-write the series with Damon Lindelof and Tom King, who will also serve as executive producers. No casting decisions have been announced.
Mundy previously worked on HBO’s True Detectie: Night Country and Lindelof’s credits include HBO’s Watchmen.

Gunn and Safran said in a joint statement: “We’re thrilled to bring this cornerstone DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that’s a critical part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.
Nathan Fillion, 53, will play Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern, in the upcoming 2025 Superman film.
Lanterns will join other big-budget series such as Harry Potter and IT prequel Welcome To Derry on HBO.
Previously, Greg Berlanti was developing a Green Lantern series in 2019.
Gunn revealed in May that Lindelof, Mundy and King would take over the revamped series for HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios.

Gunn, 57, and Safran, 58, were hired in 2022 to become co-presidents and co-CEOs of DC Studios.
Superman will be the first film in the upcoming DC Universe created by Gunn and Safran and will be a reboot of the Superman film series.
Gunn is the director and writer of Superman, while Safran is the producer.
David Corenswet, 30, will play Clark Kent, also known as Superman, in the film scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
