A large-scale search for a missing teenager who was last seen swimming in the waters off Granite Island in Victor Harbor will resume at dawn.

The large-scale search for a missing teenager last seen swimming south of Adelaide will resume at dawn.

Emergency services were alerted after the 17-year-old went missing in waters off Granite Island near Victor Harbor, 83 kilometres south of Adelaide, at about 3.15pm on Sunday.

South African police coordinated a search and rescue effort that included Polair and local surf lifeguards and search and rescue, but sadly the teenager has still not been found at the time of publication.

Superintendent Joanne Howard said the search for the teen will continue at dawn Monday.
