An inspiring couple in their sixties has traveled 12,000 miles through 16 countries from Great Britain to the Great Wall – they cycle all the way.

Grandparents Peter and Chris Lloyd embarked on the epic journey of 18 months after the decision to do something else & # 39; at retirement.

The ultra-fit OAP & # 39; s traversed cities, deserts, mountains and everything in between when they crossed Europe, the Middle East and the Far East.

The married couple of 37 years old fed on local delicacies and spent most nights in a small tent where they could find shelter.

At the end of their journey, the unconventional couple from Carlisle in Cumbria did not fly home, but chose to book a cabin in a 400-meter-long container ship.

The final leg was a three-week journey from Singapore across the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea before arriving in Southampton.

Peter said: & # 39; You never know what the day will bring. All you know is that you are going to cycle on your bike.

Peter and Chris initially planned to cycle from Great Britain to the Great Wall in January 2017, but were forced home for two months and 1,000 miles after a bizarre accident.

They had cycled all the way to Hungary when Peter slipped on tiles in a spa and broke his thigh, requiring a large metal plate and screws to be inserted into his leg.

After seven months of recovery, in October 2017, the couple left again, from the original start in Cumbria.

Among their highlights was traveling along the beautiful 600-mile Pamir Highway in Tajikistan and enjoying the culture in Turkey.

After arriving in China in November last year, Peter and Chris traveled through Southeast Asia to Singapore, where they boarded the container ship.

In the end, both Peter and Chris agreed that the best part of the entire trip along the way was meeting the friendliness of strangers, many of whom invited the couple to eat and drink.

Neither of them is a very experienced cyclist, but they have warmed up for this challenge by cycling home from Greece in 2015.

Chris, 64, said: “We were very lucky to have the time to do it and we could also afford to do it.

& # 39; It was a great experience, especially fantastic because of the wonderful people we met along the way. & # 39;

She added: & # 39; We are not super fit, but we could ride a bike and we thought that if we just did it slowly, we would eventually get there. & # 39;
