The professional criminal, who had been arrested 67 times before, reportedly ‘threatened’ people in a nearby supermarket before the crime.

Lewis’ was committed to a mental institution after a mental examination found him incapacitated in August 2019 – previously charged in prison for assaulting an officer who transferred him between prisons two years ago, reports ABC’s KTRK.

He stayed until May 1 when he was released to the Royal Personal Care Home and carried out the attack on Ms. Cook two weeks later on May 16.

Acevedo later tweeted, “Our hearts go out to the Cook family and to everyone who knew and loved this lovely woman. May she rest in peace and we may all work to address the broken Harris County criminal justice system that aims to coddle violent criminals. We deserve better. ‘
