‘He’s certainly not one to give up everything’: Brighton boss Graham Potter backs Tariq Lamptey to make ‘right decision’ as England under-20 star mulls move to Ghana
- Tariq Lamptey could establish international allegiance from England to Ghana
- The fullback has Ghanaian parents and is in talks with the national team
- Lamptey has played for England at youth level, but has yet to bend the seniors
- Graham Potter says he will support Lamptey no matter what decision he makes
Tariq Lamptey’s decision to transfer international allegiance to Ghana will not have to do with giving up his chances in England, Brighton boss Graham Potter points out.
Born of Ghanaian parents, the Londoner is poised for a tough decision with the Black Stars governing body talking to the player.
Lamptey currently represents England at Under-20 level but remains eligible to play for Ghana as he has not played a senior league appearance for The Three Lions.

And despite Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Kyle Walker and Reece James all vying for the England right back, Potter doesn’t believe Lamptey is surprised at the competition.
“He’s certainly not one to give up everything,” he explained.
‘Then it’s about him and his family and what is the right decision for him.
Whatever decision he makes, I would fully support him and try to help him achieve his goals.
‘But as a person, as a character, he is a top man. He’s not one to give up, that’s for sure. ‘
Graham Potter says he will “ fully ” support the fullback, whatever his decision
Potter agrees that the appeal of playing fullback has improved significantly in recent years, with the number of options available to Southgate coming as no big surprise.
It’s kind of how the game has evolved. Sometimes the breadth often comes from fullbacks rather than wingers, ‘he added.
‘At the moment there is an abundance of quality full-backs. Gareth has many options there.
“We are happy with Tariq, we are happy with the other options we have, and we want to try to improve.”
The impressive Lamptey is expected to start for Brighton in Sunday’s game against Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
