Graeme Souness has revealed he had to undergo emergency heart surgery after suffering an “episode” while watching England’s recent UEFA Nations League win over Finland on September 10.

The Liverpool legend has a history of heart problems since retiring from the game in 1991 and was diagnosed with coronary heart disease at the age of just 38.

Souness has also previously undergone a triple heart bypass, but remains an ever-present and enthusiastic figure as a pundit and charity fundraiser.

The 71-year-old is one of the Premier League’s most popular pundits with his Mail Sport column offering expert insight, and he is also a favourite with several outlets where Souness is often asked for his verdict.

However, a recent scare that occurred while Souness was at home left fans concerned as the Scotland legend explained the circumstances surrounding his latest emergency incident.

Successful surgery to place a new stent in one of his coronary arteries has returned Souness to form and he has been grateful for the time spent with his expert cardiologist as he continues his recovery.

“We had a bit of a setback last week,” Souness told the BBC as he explained his heart problem.

‘I had a bit of an episode 10 days ago, I was watching England play Finland, I got up at 10.30 to make a cup of tea and I got chest pains.

“Three days later, without much thought, I had a couple of stents placed in one of my coronary arteries. I feel great,” he added.

“I have a great cardiologist, Suneel Talwar, in Bournemouth. He has looked after me for 15 years and I am in good hands,” Souness said.

The former Liverpool and Newcastle manager was rushed to hospital in 2015 when he suffered a sudden heart attack which required immediate treatment and thankfully came through the procedure well.

Souness has recently been trying to raise money for DEBRA, the butterfly skin charity, but was unable to complete the cycling part of the challenge last week until chest pains prevented him from taking part.
