Governor-General David Hurley under fire for Homes by Howe testimonial video

The Australian Governor-General has been dealt a crackdown after a video testimony was unearthed of him taunting the construction company that renovated his luxury home.

Images of David Hurley and wife Linda lauding Homes by Howe’s work on their Canberra property 18 months ago remain online, along with written testimony on the builder’s website.

They also appeared in a photo with the builder and architect posted last November after the builder was named as a 2021 Master Builders Australia Finalist for extensions worth more than $1 million on the couple’s home.

The testimonies of the Australian monarch’s representative have been labeled “absurd” and “very strange” by government sources.

Government MPs have also demanded an explanation for the “outrageous error of judgment”.

While not illegal, it is widely frowned upon for a high-profile public servant who receives a taxpayer-funded salary to advertise a private company.

It is the second controversy for the governor general in weeks as he prepares to celebrate his three-year anniversary in the role next Friday.

Labor MP Julian Hill described the testimony as an error of judgment.

“It must be corrected to preserve the dignity of the office. In the same way that the Governor General must stay above politics, they must stay above commercial interests,” he said. news.com.au

The governor general’s office claims that although he and his wife agreed to appear in a video and photo for the builder privately, permission was not sought to post the material publicly.

The testimonial was issued in a personal capacity, following work on the Hurley’s private home at his own expense. There was no payment, discount or gifts in kind,” said a spokesperson.

‘The testimonial should not have included ‘Governor General’ in the distribution.

“Neither Buckingham Palace or the Prime Minister authorize any activity (official or private) undertaken by the Governor General.”

Daily Mail Australia contacted the Governor General’s office and Homes by Howe for further comment.

The video testimonial shows Governor General Hurley explaining how they spent 18 months working on the builder’s project.

‘We are very happy with the result and the end product,’ he explains.

“During this time we have had a very positive and constructive relationship with Brendan and his crew. They have been very professional, we were able to talk and we have a good result.’

The governor-general’s wife, Linda, also says a few words to praise the builder even more.

“Brendan explained it clearly. He has always had a smile on his face. He has always been nice and went out of his way to make me happy,” she said.

“And I feel very, very happy now. And I want to thank you for all the things he changed for us.

“He built a beautiful house that I look forward to living in.”

Who is David Hurley?

Governor General David Hurley, 68, is the monarch’s 27th representative to Australia.

He is an Australian former senior officer in the Australian Army who served in the military for 42 years before retiring in 2014.

He was previously the 38th Governor of NSW and served from 2014 to 2019.

July 1 marks three years in the role of the Australian Governor General.

The Homes by Howe website features a page devoted to the renovation of the Governor General’s home, along with a brief written testimony from their famous client.

“It was a great honor to be entrusted with the housing extension for the Governor General’s private residence in Canberra. Delighted with the result, David Hurley and his wife Linda will be able to enjoy their home full of memories for years to come.”

“The art of a great home extension is to create a seamless transition between old and new. This is where our high attention to detail shines through. Two-thirds of the original house was demolished for this expansion and renovation.’

The latest controversy comes just weeks later Governor General Hurley criticized for ‘disrespectful’ comments at the Queen‘s Platinum anniversary.

Reporters had asked the monarch’s Australian representative about the possibility of our nation becoming a republic while he was in England for the celebrations.

While the governor-general said the queen had a lot of “emotional support” from Australians, he believes that could change under the reign of a new monarch.

“I think the moment people focus on the Queen, and if she goes, if she passes, then the succession comes in, there’s a new discussion in Australia,” Mr Hurley replied.

His comments sparked a massive outcry at home, with Ben Fordham leading the outrage.
