Brazil is postponing visa requirements for US citizens, requiring people to show bank accounts in addition to visa applications.

The government previously announced that travelers from the United States, as well as Australia and Canada, would be required to not only obtain a visa but also prove they have at least $2,000 in the bank. However, hours before it came into effect on Wednesday, the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva decided to delay it.

This time the delay will extend until 2025. Lula’s government had previously postponed it until January 10.

Now, starting April 10, 2025, citizens of those three countries will have to present the visa, which will cost $80.90 and is only available online.

Mandatory requirements require all prospective visitors to submit a letter of intent detailing why they are traveling to Brazil, how long their trip will last, the location of their accommodation, and their telephone number.

Visitors will also be required to provide proof of travel tickets, residence and income, including their three most recent bank account statements or six most recent pay stubs.

Additionally, the Brazilian government requires each visitor to have a minimum of $2,000 in their account.

Anyone who does not meet the requirement will need to have a sponsor complete a notarized affidavit of support and provide their last three bank statements.

The tourism industry is largely opposed to the visa requirement, claiming that imposing the travel document would significantly deter citizens of Australia, Canada and the United States from visiting the country, according to Brazilian outlet G1.

The visa requirement was eliminated in 2019 by the administration of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

But under Lula, the government moved to reinstate the travel document as a form of retaliation because the United States, Canada and Australia required Brazilian citizens to present travel permits at their ports of entry.

Members of Congress objected to Lula’s travel decree and threatened to hold a vote before the lower house and the Ministry of Institutional Relations reached an agreement to postpone the visa.

At least 483,000 US citizens vacationed in Brazil between January and September of last year.
