Google has laid off about 200 members of its core team in California and will fill some of the positions in India and Mexico as technology companies in Silicon Valley continue to lay off employees en masse.

In a message see by CNBC, Google’s developer ecosystem vice president Asim Husian told staff that the job relocation is about bringing the tech giant closer “to our partners and developer communities.”

The message highlighted the emerging markets of India and Brazil.

‘Ads of this type may make many of you feel insecure or frustrated. [but] are at the service of [Google’s] broader objectives,” Husain added.

According to Google’s internal blog section, the Core Systems & Experience division is “responsible for building the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products, protecting the online security of our users, and maintaining [its] global IT infrastructure.’

There was a massive surge in hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were spending more time and money online, and big tech companies are still bigger than before the pandemic.

Still, as growth slows, companies are focusing on cutting costs.

In a recent regulatory filing, Apple said it had about 161,000 full-time equivalent employees.

Amazon announced a new round of layoffs earlier this week, this time in its AWS cloud computing business.
