Goodyear unveils a self-regenerating TIRE that uses a capsule of biodegradable fluid “spider silk” in the center of the wheel to “reload” the tread
- The band was originally unveiled this week at the Geneva Motor Show
- But fears about Coronavirus forced the organizers to cancel the milestone event
- Goodyear today unveiled its newest concept tire, the reCharge
- It can regenerate its own tread with liquid capsules made of biodegradable material
Goodyear has unveiled a bizarre concept car tire that can regenerate its own profile.
The reCharge tire has a biodegradable tread that can regenerate thanks to a special liquid composition made of biological material and reinforced with fibers inspired by spider silk – one of the toughest natural materials in the world.
Drivers can ‘charge’ their tires by placing a capsule with this liquid composition in the middle of the wheel.
The reCharge tire is designed to have a biodegradable tread and Goodyear claims that it will be reinforced with fibers inspired by the ultra-strong spider silk. The capsule is placed directly in the wheel (pictured, the pod (far right) and how it fits into the tire)
The unusual band is currently just an idea that was not created by the American company.
It is unknown if it will ever be taken into production, but would be revealed this week at the Geneva Motor Show.
The major event was canceled in the midst of growing fear of the coronavirus outbreak affecting around 91,000 people worldwide.
Goodyear has announced the project via live stream instead.

Mike Rytokoski, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Goodyear Europe, said: “Goodyear wants the band to make an even more powerful contribution to responding to the specific mobility needs of consumers.
“It was with that ambition that we wanted to develop a concept tire that was prepared for the future of personalized and convenient electric mobility.”
“The Goodyear reCharge is a concept tire without compromise and supports personalized, sustainable and trouble-free electric mobility,” adds Sebastien Fontaine, lead designer at the Goodyear Innovation Center in Luxembourg.
The tire experts say that “the tread would be supported by a lightweight, non-pneumatic frame and a long and narrow shape.”
It claims that this will also make it unnecessary to check the tire pressure and punctures.
Goodyear has a track record in making unusual concept tires to highlight its technology.
At the Geneva Motor Show 2018, which was not canceled due to an impending pandemic, it announced a tire idea of moss.
Goodyear claimed that the hubcaps would convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into oxygen, using the power of photosynthesis.
Oxygen tires transport moisture from the road to the plants, which absorb water up to 26 times their own weight.
