Golf legend Colin Montgomerie has called on Tiger Woods to retire as he continues to fight

Golf legend Colin Montgomerie has called on Tiger Woods to retire, insisting the legend has lost the “passion and charismatic aura” that made him the best in the sport.

Woods, 48, is still Golf’s biggest draw, but the number of tournaments he participates in is seriously declining due to health problems.

He has undergone five back surgeries and four knee surgeries and broke his right leg and ankle in a horrific car accident in Los Angeles in February 2021.

As a result, Woods has played in just four PGA Tour events this year and missed the cut at both the PGA Championship in May and the U.S. Open.

Woods will play The Open at Royal Troon next week but has indicated it will be his last tournament of 2024.

Ryder Cup legend and former world No. 2 Montgomerie believes it is time for Woods to finally retire.

“Aren’t we there? I would have thought we were there,” Montgomerie said. he told the Times.

“Every athlete has a moment to say goodbye, but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go. Obviously, he still feels like he can win. We’re more realistic.

“I hope people remember Tiger for who he was, the passion and the charismatic aura that surrounded him. There’s none of that left now.

‘At Pinehurst he didn’t seem to enjoy a single shot and you think, ‘What the hell is he doing? ‘ He comes to Troon and he won’t enjoy it there either.’

Earlier this week, Woods turned down the U.S. captaincy for the 2025 Ryder Cup because of his time-consuming role in the PGA Tour’s talks with LIV Golf’s Saudi sponsors.

The rejection of Woods, who was the hot favourite to take over as captain, saw Keegan Bradley take on the role.
