The dog tries to play with the crab, but falls to Mason with his pliers at the ready, in the video shot on July 5.
Mason’s three-year-old golden retriever discovers a sand crab on the beach on the Outer Banks in Frisco, North Carolina
Mason tries to stroke the crab and dig holes for it, but the crab is unimpressed and jumps forward to the dog before ducking away
Mason is first seen in front of the crab, pawing at it, trying to work out what he saw.
However, the crab doesn’t seem too keen to play and jumps to Mason before crawling backwards.
The golden retriever chooses to keep digging in the sand before chasing the crab across the beach.
Mason continues his crabs and digs small holes around them in the sand as if to encourage him to play with him.
Undaunted by the crab’s warning, Mason chases and continues to try to scratch the crab and eventually digs a ditch in the sand where the crab wanders
The three-year-old dog looks up at his owner a few times, but his attention is quickly returned to the crab on his legs.
The video was initially posted to Mason’s Instagram account on July 6 with the caption: ‘Mason vs Sand Crab’.
He shares the account, which has 1,307 followers, with fellow golden retriever Reagan, who is seven years old.
