Godzilla and the Titans Reunite in New Apple TV Plus Monsterverse Series
Although Legendary godzilla vs. Kong made a splash last summer by debuting on HBO Max and quickly becoming one of the platforms best performing featuresNext time we see the titanic monster and his fellow kaiju, they’ll be calling home a new streamer: Apple Plus.
On Thursday, Apple Plus announced that it has given the green light for a new live-action series set in Legendary’s Monsterverse from co-creators Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction, writer of Marvel’s hawk eye run that the recent Disney Plus series relies heavily on. Along with Black and Fraction, Toho’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita and Safe House Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will executive produce.
Set after the events of godzilla vs. Kong, the new self-titled series would feature Godzilla, some of the Titans, and yet another human family whose interpersonal dramas are the audience meant to care, even if the literal monsters are what everyone is really interested in. According to Apple, the new human family at the center of this show will have deep, mysterious connections to Monarch, the villainous organization responsible for inciting Godzilla and Kong to argue with each other when we last saw them.
Given how people have dragged along Monsterverse’s features pretty consistently in the past, the series will have to find a way to make their plots here feel legitimate as more than a distraction from the good stuff (read: monster battles). But depending on which monsters appear and how they fight, it might be worth plodding through a little bit of human mundaneness when the show debuts.
Currently, there is no word on when the new Monsterverse series will go into production.
