Oliver Bearman, an 18-year-old English driver, will make his stunning debut for Ferrari at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix this weekend.

On Friday he will participate in qualifying, replacing Carlos Sainz, who has suffered appendicitis.

Bearman will become the youngest British Formula 1 competitor in history.

The 6ft 3in teenager currently drives in Formula Two and is Ferrari’s reserve driver.

In a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, Ferrari said: “Carlos Sainz has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will require surgery.

‘Starting in FP3 and for the rest of this weekend, he will be replaced by reserve driver Oliver Bearman. Oliver will therefore not participate again in this round of the F2 Championship. “The Ferrari family wishes Carlos a speedy recovery.”

Sainz, who finished seventh in FP2 on Thursday, admitted he had struggled late in the day.

He said: “Obviously a very difficult day after feeling unwell for the last 24 hours has been tough and difficult for me.”

“Today I focused on trying to get back on track and learn as much as possible about the car without pushing the limits too much, as it was still not on the ideal side, but we managed to complete the program without problems.” ‘
