Two years ago, Gmail also suffered an outage – this time for five hours – that prevented frustrated users from sending or receiving emails.
Several frustrated users complained on Twitter.
Many seemed to get a 502 error when opening their emails, which read, “The server has encountered a temporary error and cannot complete your request.”
While that problem seemed to primarily affect UK users, others reported problems getting into Gmail from other countries, including Spain and Kenya.
Gmail has about 1.5 billion users worldwide. The cause of the latest outage is not yet known.
