gmail: Google is rolling out Gmail, a Docs-like feature for Chat

After rolling out the ‘smart composing‘ feature Gmail and Docs, Google is now bringing a machine learning-powered feature to Chat. Users will soon be able to write messages faster and easier with smart compose Google Chat.

“Today we are pleased to announce (that) smart compose is now available in Google Chat on (the) web,” the company said.

What is “smart drafting”
Smart Compose suggests relevant contextual phrases as users type, essentially saving users time by reducing repetitive writing. The feature also reduces spelling and grammar errors.

Enable or disable custom suggestions in smart drafting
By default, Smart Compose automatically provides suggestions based on the user’s writing style. But you can turn it off.

  1. In the top right corner, click Settings Settings, and then click View all settings.
  2. Under “General”, scroll down to “Smart Compose Personalization”.
  3. Select Personalization on or Personalization off.

Using Smart Compose in Google Chat
The assistive tool suggests short replies to messages, allowing users to communicate with colleagues faster to make conversations or projects more efficient. The feature is ON by default and can be turned off by unchecking ‘Turn on predictive suggestions while composing on web and desktop’ under smart compose in chat settings.

When you see a suggestion you like, click the “tab” button to finish the sentence.

Availability
The Smart Compose feature is available to everyone Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts. The company said there is no admin control for this feature, but a default value of this setting can be controlled by admins.

Rollout timeline
Google said the feature has rolled out to all users and the rollout for domains with scheduled release (up to 15 days for feature visibility) will begin on June 26.
