A gang of young thugs have locals terrified by escalating violence after an alleged unprovoked attack on a delivery driver.

The alleged incident on Glebe Point Road in Glebe, Sydney’s inner west, around 1am on April 15, was filmed by a local and shared with 2GB’s Ben Fordham.

It shows the delivery driver in a high-visibility jacket surrounded by the thugs who pounced on him and allegedly tried to attack him.

They allegedly threw several objects at the driver before forcing him to flee on foot, pursued by the thugs.

Locals said the alleged incident is just the latest in a series of escalating incidents that have been occurring in the suburb recently.

Tim, a resident who has lived in the area for five years, told Fordham the incidents were getting progressively worse.

—They had been sitting there most of the night, drinking vodka. “I found the remains of a bottle of Smirnoff vodka the next day,” she alleged.

“You have a delivery driver just doing his job, he’s (allegedly) been attacked.”

The footage shows a gang of teenagers on bicycles, described by Tim as “reinforcements”, who were supposedly called by the others to join the attack.

Several of the incidents are said to have occurred near a local school and a late-night convenience store.

“I wouldn’t go out at night unless I absolutely had to,” Tim added.

Police were called to the scene, but the group had left before they arrived.

NSW Police Detective Chief Inspector Grant Watson insisted police “want everyone to feel safe”.

“NSW Police officers are doing everything they can to catch those responsible, but we need everyone to do their part,” he said in a statement.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested last Wednesday in connection with the incident and charged with affray and Driving a means of transportation taken without the owner’s consent.

He has been granted bail and is expected to appear in court on May 29.
