A journalist has revealed that she contracted a bacterial infection during a procedure to replace her silicone breast implants.
Mariana Martins from Brazil shared a video on Instagram on Tuesday explaining that she underwent surgery in March and began experiencing a burning discomfort in the days following the procedure.
After meeting with the surgeon, the former reporter for Record Goiás and TV Anhanguera discovered that she had fluid accumulated under a scar and sent tissue to a laboratory for further examination.
The test results came in late June, on the eve of her wedding, and showed she had contracted a mycobacterial infection.
Martins has now had to postpone her wedding and says she is “fighting” but does not know how long it will take for her infection to clear up.

“My infectious disease specialist was adamant that I got it during surgery, but he couldn’t say if it was on the prosthesis or where it got contaminated,” Martins said in the video.
“He was adamant: ‘You didn’t have it before surgery, you got it during surgery,'” he added.
Martins followed her doctor’s advice and underwent surgery to remove the implants on July 10.
The months of uncertainty leading up to the operation and the weeks following have created a level of anxiety, she said.

“I don’t really know what this infection is. It’s an infection that takes a long time to heal,” he added.
“Antibiotic treatment can last up to a year and a half. I don’t know yet how long this treatment will last.”
The bacteria can cause tuberculosis and leprosy. Symptoms include weight loss, cough, weakness or fatigue, fever and chills, and loss of appetite.
“I’m fighting, I’m going to get through this. I want to think that everything will turn out well in my marriage and that my health will be 100% recovered,” said Martins, who will celebrate his wedding in August.
